In mid-August, 10,000 lightning strikes in California over a 72-hour period caused more than 367 new fires, 23 of which were considered major blazes. In all, the wildfires in California burned more than 850,000 acres, destroyed over 1,400 structures, and caused at least seven deaths.
In late September, additional wind-driven fires have increased those numbers. Fires have now killed 29 people and destroyed more than 7,000 structures since August 15. Since the beginning of 2020, over 3.7 million acres in California have burned from over 8,100 wildfires.
The American Red Cross teams and volunteers are providing hotels and shelter support to individuals and families that have had to evacuate, and are supporting impacted communities with registration, snacks, and meals. World Central Kitchen continues to respond, providing meals to first responders and evacuees alike.
The Cisco Foundation will match eligible donations up to $10,000 per employee. Donations will not be counted toward employees' annual $25,000 match limit.
