A M5.9 earthquake struck Afghanistan's Paktika and Khost provinces on the morning of 22 June 2022. At least 1000 people were killed and more than 1500 others have been injured, with the death toll likely to rise as search and recovery efforts continue. Widespread damage to homes and infrastructure is being reported.
Cisco Foundation has launched a $50K Afghanistan Earthquake disaster campaign to support the efforts of International Medical Corps which has been working in Paktika province since 2004. They mobilized staff and ambulances within the first hours after the quake and have been providing critical trauma care to impacted communities. They are also deploying teams to other impacted areas, and are working to address needs for emergency shelter, food, non-food items, mental health services, and water / sanitation / hygiene support. The campaign will also support Islamic Relief, who has teams in Paktika province, the worst affected area, to provide immediate food and cash assistance; they are also assessing needs for emergency shelter.
