Hurricane Dorian made landfall as a Category 5 storm, when it hit the Abaco Islands in the northern Bahamas, before moving on to the island of Grand Bahama. The intense and slow-moving hurricane has now lashed the northwest Bahamas for more than 48 hours, though it is slowly moving away from Grand Bahama island. The storm has brought widespread devastation; on the Abaco islands, at least five deaths have been reported and there has been extensive damage to homes and buildings. A complete assessment of damage and impact will take place once the storm has completely passed. Since December 28th, there have been nearly 1,000 tremors and aftershocks in Puerto Rico, the largest one striking in the early hours of January 7th and registering a 6.4 on the Richter scale; another earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 hit Puerto Rico on Saturday, January 11. Nearly 270,000 households have lost access to water, while more than 5,000 people have lost their homes. Aftershocks continue and many are afraid to stay within their homes and near large structures. Because the island's water system has been affected by the vast power outages, access to safe water remains a concern alongside addressing mental health and health-related care. Indonesia is struggling with a resurgence of COVID as the highly transmissible Delta variant is spreading quickly across the country with only 5.5% of the population being fully vaccinated. On Wednesday 7/14 a record 54,000 new infections were reported, and infection rates are up about sevenfold from a month ago. Total cases in Indonesia have exceeded 2.6 million with more than 68,000 fatalities. Hospitals are being overwhelmed, and lack medicines, PPE and oxygen. In late January, Tropical Cyclone Ana brought strong winds and heavy rains to parts of Madagascar, Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe, impacting hundreds of thousands of people with devastating floods and landslides. At least 116 people have died, tens of thousands of homes have been damaged or destroyed along with schools, health centers, businesses, and infrastructure. Just two weeks later Tropical Cyclone Batsirai made landfall on the east coast of Madagascar with wind gusts of 146mph and torrential rains, causing at least 10 additional fatalities and displacing another 50,000 people; impacting many of the same areas already suffering from Tropical Cyclone Ana. Whole villages are reported to have been washed away by the latest storm.
